Day 67

Testing season is upon us in Bushwick. Every six weeks or so our little scholars are put through days of simulated standardized testing. I normally proctor for hours, walking around and actively observing some interesting scholar habits. I also get to witness the results of poor sleeping habits. It's unfortunate but I think a lot of poor standardized test scores could very well be attributed to poor sleeping patterns. According to studies published in one of my favorite parenting books, Nurture Shock, kids perform a full two grade levels below their potential when they're not getting enough sleep. I think sleep is such a key to success I even wrote about it in my other blog. We're essentially shooting ourselves in the foot by not turning off the television, unplugging the game systems and sending our kids to bed so their brains can benefit from at least 8 hours of sleep.

Speaking of sleep. Isn't this bow just dreamy? OK, that was a stretch. I found it on eBay while trying to promote the alma mater of a colleague. Every classroom at our school is named after a college that one of us attended. Last year one of the classrooms I taught in was named after the University of Georgia, hence the Bulldog Bow. This particular seller on eBay has quite a collection of inexpensive handcrafted cotton bows that are really worth looking into. In fact, I might just go ahead and cash in on the free shipping deal that's available for purchasing 5 or more. At $13 a tie that's really an awesome deal.

I couldn't resist taking a snapshot of one of my scholars yesterday afternoon. Clearly I've influenced her manicure.
